Your first hot air balloon ride is a mix of excitement and questions. What time do I need to be up? Will it be cold? Does it feel scary? What happens when we land?

This step-by-step guide takes you through a typical morning so nothing comes as a surprise.

Quick Answer

Expect a pickup around 4–5 am, a drive to the desert of around an hour, refreshments and a safety briefing while the balloons are inflated, then up to 60 minutes of flight at sunrise. After a gentle landing you receive your flight certificate and, depending on your package, enjoy breakfast, a camel ride and archery before returning to Dubai by late morning.

Before You Go: Booking Essentials

  • Passport copy for every passenger, needed at booking (GCAA regulation)
  • Each passenger's weight, also at booking. Passengers over 119 kg (260 lbs) need an additional seat.
  • Age: 5 to 80 years
  • Health: not suitable for pregnant women, or for people with heart conditions, severe back or knee problems, major surgery in the last 6 months or a fear of heights

You'll get your pickup time the evening before. Flights depend on the weather, so keep your phone on in case of any change.

Step-by-Step: Your Balloon Morning

1. Early pickup (around 4–5 am)

A 4x4 collects you from your hotel. On shared packages, the driver may make a few stops for other guests. Most people doze on the drive. If you've chosen the self-drive option, you'll get directions to the meeting point with your confirmation.

2. Arrival at the launch site

You arrive in the dark to a traditional majlis with tea, coffee and light refreshments. There are basic toilet facilities here; use them, as there aren't any on the balloon.

3. Safety briefing and waiver

The crew explains how to get in and out of the basket and how to hold the landing position. Everyone signs a waiver. Listen carefully; it only takes a few minutes.

4. Watching the inflation

Fans blow cold air into the envelopes, then the burners heat it and the balloons slowly rise off the sand. It's loud, bright and spectacular. Get your camera ready (see our photography tips).

5. Climbing in

Once the balloon is upright, you climb into the basket using footholds in its side. It's a bit of a scramble, which is why you need to be moderately fit.

6. Take-off

This surprises most first-timers: you barely feel it. There's no jolt; the ground just quietly drops away. Because you move with the wind, it feels calm, even at height.

7. The flight (up to 60 minutes)

The sun rises over the dunes, the other balloons spread across the sky, and the pilot changes altitude to find the best winds and views. Between burner blasts, it's remarkably quiet. Read more about what you'll see from the balloon.

8. Landing

The pilot tells you when to take the landing position: knees bent, back to the direction of travel and holding the handles. Most landings are gentle. On a breezy morning, the basket may bump, tip onto its side or slide a little way, which is completely normal.

9. Flight certificate and activities

Everyone receives an official flight certificate. Then, depending on your package, you'll have a buffet breakfast at the desert camp, a camel ride, archery, a quad bike ride or a vintage Land Rover ride.

10. Return to Dubai

You're driven back to your hotel, usually arriving by late morning. Most people are pleasantly tired, so plan something relaxed for the afternoon.

How It Feels

  • Motion sickness? Very rare, as the balloon moves smoothly with the wind.
  • Scary? Most people find it much calmer than expected. That said, it isn't recommended for anyone with a fear of heights.
  • Hot or cold? Cold on the ground before dawn, especially November to March. Warm under the burners, and warmer again once the sun is up.
  • Noisy? The burners roar in short bursts. In between, it's silent.

What to Wear

  • Layers: a light jacket or fleece you can take off after sunrise
  • Closed-toe flat shoes: the landing site is sandy and uneven
  • A cap or hat: the burners overhead give off heat
  • Avoid long loose scarves, dresses that make climbing difficult, and high heels

For more ideas, see our desert outfit guide.

What to Bring

  • Phone or camera with a strap, fully charged
  • Small bag you can hold on your lap in the car (space in the basket is tight)
  • Sunglasses for after sunrise
  • Any medication you need
  • Cash or card for photos or souvenirs

Best Packages for a First Flight

For most first-timers, we recommend the Deluxe package with breakfast: the complete sunrise morning, with time at the desert camp to relax afterwards. If you're watching your budget, the Standard flight gives you the same time in the air. Not sure? Read Standard vs Deluxe vs Adventure.

Why Do Dubai Hot Air Balloon Rides Always Happen at Sunrise? From 3,000 AED

Why Do Dubai Hot Air Balloon Rides Always Happen at Sunrise?

Nobody loves a 4 am alarm on holiday. So why can't you take a balloon ride in the Dubai desert at a civilised hour, or at sunset like a desert safari? The sunrise is beautiful, but that isn't really why balloons fly then. It's about air temperature, wind and safety. Here's the explanation in plain English.Quick AnswerHot air balloons in Dubai fly at sunrise because the early-morning air is cool, calm and stable. Once the sun heats the desert sand, it creates rising currents of hot air (thermals) and gusty winds that make balloon flight unpredictable and landings unsafe. Cool air also gives the balloon more lift, so it can carry more people with less fuel.Reason 1: The Winds Are Calmest Around DawnBalloons can only fly safely in light winds. Unlike a plane or helicopter, a balloon has no engine to push it; it travels with the wind. Gentle wind means a smooth flight and a soft landing. Strong or gusty wind means a fast, bumpy landing, or no flight at all.In the desert, wind is usually at its lightest in the early morning. As the day warms up, the wind generally picks up, often through the afternoon.Reason 2: No Desert Thermals YetWhen the sun heats the sand, the air just above it warms and rises in columns called thermals. Birds of prey and gliders love them. Balloons don't.A balloon flying into a thermal can be lifted or pushed unexpectedly, which makes it hard for the pilot to control altitude precisely. Desert sand heats quickly, so thermals start forming not long after sunrise. By mid-morning, conditions are usually no longer suitable. That's why flights are timed to take off around first light and land before the heat builds.Reason 3: Cool Air Means More LiftA hot air balloon flies because the air inside the envelope is hotter, and therefore lighter, than the air outside. The bigger the temperature difference, the more lift the balloon gets.On a cool morning, the pilot only needs to heat the envelope a moderate amount to get strong lift.On a hot afternoon, when the air outside might be 40°C or more, the envelope would have to be heated much more to generate the same lift, which means more fuel, more strain on the fabric and fewer passengers. This is also why balloon flights are easier in the cooler months, and why passenger weight matters so much at booking.Reason 4: Stable Air for a Smooth, Quiet FlightOvernight the ground cools, leaving a layer of cool, stable air near the surface. This stable layer is what gives you that famous smooth, silent feeling on a sunrise flight, where it feels like you're standing still while the world moves below.Reason 5: Safer LandingsEverything comes together at the end of the flight. Light winds mean a slower landing speed, and the chase crew can reach the landing site easily across the desert. That's why the safety rules put so much emphasis on the weather.Reason 6 (the Bonus): The LightAnd yes, the view. Sunrise light is low and warm, so it brings out every ripple in the dunes, casts long shadows and turns the sand orange and gold. Wildlife is also more active in the cool morning. It's the best time of day to see the desert, as well as the safest time to fly. Find out what you see from the basket. Why Not at Sunset?Evenings are usually windier and the air is still warm from the day, with thermals still rising from hot sand. Even if conditions calmed down, the balloon would have to land as it got dark, which makes it much harder for the pilot to judge the landing and for the chase crew to follow. Sunrise gives the pilot more daylight and calmer air for landing. Is There a Best Season for Sunrise Flights?Flights run through much of the year, but the cooler months (roughly October to April) usually have the most comfortable temperatures, clearer air and the best views. In summer, the sun rises earlier, so pickups are earlier too. See our guide to the best time to visit Dubai.Making the Early Start EasierGo to bed early the night before and lay out your clothes.Sleep on the drive. Your driver knows the way.Choose a package with breakfast to recover afterwards.Skip the 4 am alarm altogether with the overnight package: spend the evening and night at a desert camp, and wake up close to the launch site.[tours codes="AUT-HB-05,AUT-HB-03,AUT-HB-09"]Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat time is pickup for a Dubai balloon ride?Usually between around 4 and 5 am, depending on the season and where you're staying. Your exact time is sent the evening before. Can a flight be cancelled even at sunrise?Yes. If the wind, visibility or forecast isn't suitable, the operator will cancel or reschedule. You can then pick another date or get a refund. How long is the flight?Up to 60 minutes, depending on wind and weather on the day.Browse all sunrise hot air balloon rides in Dubai.

Shared vs. Private Hot Air Balloon Rides in Dubai

Once you've decided to fly, the next choice is whether to share a basket with other guests or book a balloon just for your group. Both give you the same sunrise over the desert. The difference is space, privacy, flexibility and, of course, price.Quick AnswerShared flights start from 999 AED per person and are the best value for couples, solo travellers and small groups.Private charters are 8,999 AED for up to 10 guests or 19,999 AED for up to 27 guests, a flat rate with private 4x4 transfers. For a group of 8–10, a private charter costs a similar amount per person to a shared flight with breakfast. For proposals and special occasions, Breakfast in the Sky can be booked privately for up to 4 guests (9,999 AED).What's the Difference? SharedPrivateWho's in the basketYou plus other guests, in compartmentsOnly your groupPricePer person, from 999 AEDFlat rate, from 8,999 AEDTransfersShared 4x4 (private upgrade +350 AED per vehicle)Private 4x4 includedFlightUp to 60 min at sunriseUp to 60 min at sunriseBreakfast and activitiesIncluded in Deluxe and AdventureOptional add-ons per personBest forCouples, solo travellers, small groupsFamilies, friend groups, celebrations, companiesShared Balloon RidesOn a shared flight, you'll be in a large basket divided into compartments, with a few guests per section and the pilot in the centre. Private 4x4s collect everyone, you have majlis refreshments at the launch site, and then you fly up to 60 minutes at sunrise with no one else on board. Everyone receives a flight certificate.Charter optionsUp to 10 guests: 8,999 AED flat. Add the 100 AED breakfast, and you're at roughly 1,000 AED per person for a completely private morning. For a group of 4, the same charter is about 2,250 AED per person, so a shared flight with a private 4x4 upgrade (350 AED per vehicle) is the better choice unless privacy really matters. The Middle Ground: Private Transfers, Shared FlightIf you want privacy on the road but don't need the whole balloon, you have two options:Upgrade any shared-transfer package to a private 4x4 for 350 AED per vehicle (up to 6 guests).Book the Vintage Land Rover package, which always comes with private 4x4 transfers (a 450 AED per-car surcharge applies). For Proposals and Special OccasionsBreakfast in the Sky is our most exclusive option: a specially designed seated basket, a private butler and an international breakfast served in the air. Book it privately for up to 4 guests at 9,999 AED, or share it (minimum 2 guests, subject to availability) from 4,999 AED per person.[tours codes="AUT-HB-09,AUT-HB-06"]Frequently Asked QuestionsHow many people are in a shared balloon? It varies by balloon size and the morning's bookings. Baskets are divided into compartments so everyone has a place at the edge.Is a private balloon flight longer? No. Both are up to 60 minutes. The difference is who's on board. Can I book a private balloon for a corporate event?Yes. The 27-guest charter is popular for team outings. Hot Air Balloon Dubai with Kids: Ages, Height & Tips From 3,000 AED

Hot Air Balloon Dubai with Kids: Ages, Height & Tips

A sunrise balloon flight is one of those experiences children remember for years: the roar of the burners, the huge balloon lighting up in the dark and animals running across the dunes below. But with a 4 am start, age rules and a basket to climb into, parents understandably have questions. Here's everything you need to know before booking a hot air balloon ride in Dubai with kids.Quick AnswerMinimum age: 5 years. Children under 5 cannot fly.Height: your child should be tall enough to see over the basket wall and able to stand for the whole flight.Child prices start from 959 AED (self-drive) and 999 AED (with transfers).Children must fly with an adult and be able to follow the landing instructions. The Deluxe package with breakfast is usually the best fit for families.Age RulesThe minimum age for a hot air balloon flight in Dubai is 5 years. As with adults, each child needs a passport copy and their weight declared at booking, under GCAA regulations. If your family includes a toddler, they can't join the flight. Some families split up for the morning, with one parent flying with the older children and the other staying at the hotel, or book two separate mornings. For the Adventure package, children aged 5 and over can fly, but quad bike riders must be 16 or older.Height: Can Your Child See Over the Basket? There's no single published height limit, but there is a practical one. Balloon baskets have high walls for safety, typically around chest height on an average adult. A child who is too short won't see much of the view and may find it hard to hold the landing position. As a rule of thumb, if your child is around 1.2 m (4 ft) or taller, they'll usually be comfortable. If they're smaller than that, or you're not sure, contact our team before booking and we'll check with the operator. Is It Safe for Children?Balloon flights in Dubai run under GCAA regulations, with licensed pilots and weather checks before every flight (see is hot air ballooning safe in Dubai?). For children, the key points are:Landings can involve a bump or the basket tipping gently. Children need to hold the rope handles and keep their knees bent, so practise the position with them during the briefing.Burners make a loud roar and give off heat overhead. A cap helps, and it's worth warning younger kids about the noise.Standing: the flight is up to 60 minutes standing up. There's no seating, except in the special Breakfast in the Sky basket.Child PricesPackageAdultChildStandard (meet at location)999 AED959 AEDStandard (with 4x4 transfers)1,099 AED999 AEDDeluxe with breakfast1,199 AED1,099 AEDAdventure with quad bike1,350 AED1,250 AEDOvernight Desert Safari1,995 AED1,795 AEDFor larger families, a private charter for up to 10 guests (8,999 AED flat) can work out at a similar cost per person, with the basket to yourselves.Best Packages for FamiliesDeluxe with breakfast: best all-rounderAfter a very early start, a hot buffet breakfast at the desert camp, a camel ride and archery keep kids happy and give the morning a proper finish.Private charter: best for bigger familiesNo strangers, no rush, and you can position the children where they can see best. Private 4x4 transfers are included.Overnight Desert Safari: best adventureOlder kids love this one: a vintage Land Rover wildlife drive, falconry, dinner and a night in a cabana, then the balloon flight in the morning. And no 4 am hotel pickup.[tours codes="AUT-HB-03,AUT-HB-08,AUT-HB-05"]Tips for Flying with KidsPut them to bed early the night before, and let them sleep in the car; transfers leave around 4 am.Dress in layers. Desert mornings can be cold from November to March, and it warms up quickly after sunrise. Closed-toe shoes are a must. Our desert outfit guide helps.Bring snacks and water, especially on packages without breakfast.Toilet stop at the launch site before take-off.Talk them through it: the noise, the landing position and that the balloon will move gently.Plan a quiet afternoon; everyone will be tired.Other Family-Friendly Desert IdeasIf your children are under 5, or you want another desert day, see our guide to a desert safari with family.Frequently Asked QuestionsCan a 4-year-old go on a hot air balloon in Dubai? No. The minimum age is 5 years.Do children need a passport copy?Yes. Every passenger, including children, needs a passport copy and their weight provided at booking. Can my child sit down during the flight?Standard baskets have no seats. The Breakfast in the Sky experience uses a specially designed seated basket. What if my child gets scared? Most children are calm once airborne, as the balloon moves very gently. Talk to the pilot during the briefing; the crew are used to flying with families.

Hot Air Balloon Photography Tips for Dubai From 3,000 AED

Hot Air Balloon Photography Tips for Dubai

A sunrise balloon flight over the Dubai desert is one of the most photogenic things you can do in the UAE. It's also surprisingly easy to come home with blurry, washed-out photos, because the light changes fast, the basket moves and you only get one try. These tips will help you get strong shots quickly, so you can spend most of the flight just looking.Quick AnswerBring one camera or phone with a wide lens, and a strap. Don't change lenses in the air.Shoot the inflation in the dark, the sunrise, your balloon's shadow on the dunes, and other balloons for scale.Use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster in daylight) and expose for the sky at sunrise.Drones aren't allowed, and nothing can be dropped from the basket, so secure everything. What Gear to BringPhone photographersA modern phone does a great job here. Make sure it's fully charged (you'll leave your hotel around 4 am) and clear some storage. Use the ultra-wide lens for the landscape and switch to the standard lens for the other balloons. A wrist strap or lanyard is strongly recommended.Camera photographersLens: a wide-to-standard zoom (around 16–35mm or 24–70mm on full frame) covers almost everything. A short telephoto (70–200mm) is useful for other balloons and wildlife, but only bring it if you can do without changing lenses mid-flight.Two bodies are better than one lens change: sand and wind at the landing site make lens swaps risky.Spare battery in an inside pocket; cold mornings drain batteries faster. No tripod. There's no room and the basket moves anyway. What to leave at homeDrones: not permitted near balloons.Big camera bags: space in the basket is tight.Lens caps you can't clip on: anything you drop is gone.Settings That WorkMomentLightSuggested settingsInflation (dark)Very low, with bright burner flashesWidest aperture, ISO 1600–6400, 1/125s. Time your shot with the burner flame.Pre-sunrise in the airLow, bluef/2.8–f/4, ISO 400–1600, 1/250sSunriseHigh contrastExpose for the sky; −0.7 to −1 EV exposure compensation. f/5.6–f/8, 1/500s+Full daylightBrightf/8, ISO 100–200, 1/1000sOn a phone, tap on the bright sky to set exposure, then drag the exposure slider down slightly to keep the colour in the sunrise. Turn off the flash for the whole trip.Shot List: What to Photograph1. The inflationThe launch field in the dark, full of balloons lighting up with each burst from the burners, is often the best photo of the day. Get low, frame a balloon against the night sky, and wait for the flame.2. Inside the envelopeIf you get a chance before the balloon is fully upright, point your camera up into the opening at the glowing fabric. Only do this where the crew says it is safe to stand.3. The sunrise over the dunesInclude some of the dunes and, if you can, another balloon in the frame. A sunrise with nothing in the foreground looks like any other sunrise.4. Your balloon's shadowSoon after sunrise, the balloon throws a long, sharp shadow across the sand. Shoot straight down or at an angle so the dune ridges run through the frame.5. Other balloons for scaleA small balloon over a huge sea of dunes shows how big the desert really is. Use a longer focal length to compress the scene.6. Wildlife and desert lifeOryx, gazelles and camel farms look great from above. Use a fast shutter speed, as both you and they are moving.7. People in the basketTurn around. Your travel companions lit by the golden sunrise, with the burner flame overhead, make a better souvenir than another landscape.8. The landing and pack-upThe crew packing the huge envelope into the sand, and the 4x4s lined up at the landing field, round off the story.Composition TipsKeep the horizon level. It's easy to tilt when leaning on the basket edge.Avoid the basket rim in the corner of your frame, or use it on purpose as a frame.Shoot in bursts during the burner flames and sunrise.Shoot RAW (or ProRAW on iPhone) if you edit; sunrise colours recover much better.Which Flight Is Best for Photography?Every flight follows the same sunrise schedule. The advantage of a private balloon is space: you can move to either side of the basket without squeezing past other guests. Breakfast in the Sky uses a seated basket with a butler, which is great for relaxed lifestyle shots. For couples, an evening desert photoshoot pairs well with a morning flight.[tours codes="AUT-HB-08,AUT-HB-09,AUT-HB-03"]Practical Tips on the DayWipe your lens before take-off; condensation can form when moving from a warm car into cold desert air.Keep a cap on; heat from the burners is noticeable, and it keeps glare off your screen.Hold on during landing. Put the camera away when the crew asks you to take the landing position.Put the camera down for a few minutes. Seriously, just watch the sun come up.Frequently Asked QuestionsCan I bring a selfie stick?Short handheld sticks are usually fine if secured with a strap, but check with the crew during the briefing, as space is limited on shared flights. Can I fly a drone to film the balloon? No. Drones are not allowed around balloon operations.Do I get any photos from the operator? You receive a flight certificate. Photo packages may be offered on the day by the operator; ask the crew at the launch site. Also read: what you see from a hot air balloon in Dubai.
