The Dubai Fountain

WHAT IS THE DUBAI FOUNTAIN?

The Dubai Fountain is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. It is regarded as one of the world’s largest musical fountains, attracting thousands of visitors each day. The fountain is located on the 30-acre lake in Downtown Dubai, between Souk AL Bahar and The Dubai Mall, in the Burj Khalifa. It was designed by the same team that created the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas.

The fountain is 900 feet long, which is the length of two football fields. Its design includes five different-sized circles, two arcs, and powerful water spouts that shoot water to incredible heights. The construction cost is estimated to be around AED 800 million (218,000,000 USD).

The Design and Construction of the Dubai Fountain

Emaar Properties, the developer of the Burj Khalifa, commissioned WET Design of California to design and build this remarkable lake with a fountain system. Interestingly, the fountains at the Bellagio Hotel Lake in Las Vegas were designed and built by the same company.

6,600 lights and 50 different coloured projectors illustrate the Dubai Fountain. The Dubai Fountain is 275 metres (902 feet) long, and the largest fountains shoot water up to 500 feet (152.4 metres) into the air. The fountain system sways to the beat of Arabic and world music ranging from classical to contemporary.

The fountain system at the Burj Khalifa cost AED 800 million to build (USD 218 million).

In 2008, the master developer held a competition in the UAE to name the fountain that would be part of the Human Made Lake that would be built between the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. As a result, Emaar chose the name Dubai Fountain, which was approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The Dubai Fountain was unveiled on May 8, 2009, in conjunction with the opening of the Dubai Mall.

The waterjets in the Dubai Mall fountain, as it is also known, are organised in 5 circles and two arcs. In 2010, an element of fire was added as part of the 2011 New Year’s celebration, but it was later removed.

The Dubai Fountain’s central light beam can be seen from 20 miles away.
